User reviews
Just sitting down on a sunny Saturday afternoon and trying to catch up on some reviews that I should have been doing long before now. I spirited this beer from Edinburgh, Scotland all the way home to NC. I'd like to thank my friends Benjii (Brewer) and Sevare for this beer and the fabulous time they showed us when we visited. This beer has been store at refrigerator temperature for almost 10 months.
Aroma: Fantastic mix of aromas of chocolate, coffee and dark malt. I would pick this beer for the aroma alone. There was Belgian candi sugar in the mix so there are some subtle fruity aromatics to it also. Very little hop aromas.
Look (Appearance): Jet black, with off-white almost chocolate milk coloured head. I did not let this beer come up to a proper serving temperature. The head itself has stayed quite nicely but came out relatively small.
Taste: Finish is sweetish roasty but not bitter. A touch of light dried fruits with light alcohol warmth on the breath. A small amount of hop bitterness lingers.
Mouthfeel: Oily, very full body (almost chewy) with little (or soft carbonation).
Second Look (Overall Impression): This was a very good beer. Although mine was almost 10 months old when I opened it, I think it still held up very well. Would I recommend it, absolutely. I think the addition of Candi sugar gives this beer a slightly different dimension than most other imperial stouts. I also think that the abv for this beer is just about right as any more would muddle both the taste and mouthfeel.
