Brewery Notes
It is almost impossible to believe that York Brewery is only 14 years old, given our impressive list of both National and International Awards.
York Brewery started production in May 1996 at Toft Green, becoming the first brewery within the city walls since JJ Hunts nearly 40 years previous. The brewing plant came from Original Lions Brewery in Blackburn and was moved to fabricators to bring it up to our high quality standards.
Our very first brew was Yorkshire Terrier (4.2%), a premium bitter with rich, creamy malt and a full hop palate. This ale made up half of our original products, with our other beer for sale being Stonewall (3.7%). Gradually over time other ales have been added to our core range, first Centurion's Ghost Ale in 2000, followed by Guzzler in 2003. As time has gone on, we have brewed more seasonal ales and now have a monthly cask calendar showcasing a new beer each month.
In December 2008, York signed a cross-pennine deal to secure the future of the brewery, under the steerage of pub operator Mitchell's of Lancaster. The deal marks a return to brewing for the Mitchell's family firm who ceased their own beer production in July 1999.
Under new ownership, York Brewery is still committed to producing quality real ales for the discerning drinker and will achieve this through our company philosophy:
'To operate a successful brewery and pubs which are professionally managed in a fun atmosphere. Producing high quality cask conditioned ale and providing a 'special' customer service in our pubs.'
