Had a chance before I left York to visit this little pub. Just a stones throw from the train station and a stones throw from the River Ouse this pub is position perfectly for weary travelers or weary tourist making their way from the city or to the city.
Maltings has everything I think a local should have. I was not too large (so there was no crush of people to contend with), yet it was quite comfortable (with plenty of room to move about). Broken up into three small areas, it was quite easy to pick an area that suited you. There was also a small sitting area outdoors to the far left. Cask ales were on (a nice little selection), as well as some kegged. And they had the ever-present cider that can be found in most pubs.
Although I went there alone, I felt quite comfortable and had an enjoyable evening people watching (young people on the terrace, older group in one of the three small areas and there was a nice little pickup band playing in the small area to the right).
If you get the chance, go. One of the little pubs of York that should be on everybody's pub crawl list.
